Worldbuilding Software
yazar.io is a worldbuilding software that keeps every element of a novel's universe - characters, locations, organizations, lore, family relationships, timeline, notes - in one connected structure. This page walks through the pieces of that structure and how they work together.
What pieces make up yazar.io as worldbuilding software?
When you create a book, the Characters, Locations, Organizations, Lore/World Rules, Family Tree, Event Flow, and Notes sections open up. Some sections open or stay hidden automatically based on the book's genre, and you can toggle them yourself afterward.
Do these sections work independently of each other?
No - they're all fed by a single `links` table. Open a character and the organizations they belong to, the locations they live in, and related people show up automatically; you never add them one by one. A link forms either by typing @Name anywhere in text, or by setting up a direct relationship (membership, parent/spouse).
What role do free-form notes and the timeline play?
The Notes section holds loose ideas that haven't turned into a character or location yet - it can double as a moodboard. Event Flow keeps a world's key events (a war, a birth, a falling-out) in an ordered list with a date label; it's not a calendar.
Is worldbuilding software the same thing as worldbuilding?
No - worldbuilding is the PROCESS of designing a fictional universe (see our what is worldbuilding glossary entry). Worldbuilding software is a TOOL that helps you keep that process organized; yazar.io is one such tool.
Can I use it for more than one book or universe?
Yes - each book is its own workspace with its own independent characters, locations, organizations, and lore.
Do I need to log in to use yazar.io?
Yes - building and editing a book requires login; row-level security means no other user can reach your book even if they know a link to it.
