Best Worldbuilding Software
Worldbuilding tools tend to cluster at two extremes: sprawling platforms built for tabletop RPG campaigns (World Anvil) and flexible general-purpose note tools (Notion). yazar.io offers a third path built specifically for novelists: a narrow, automatically-connected, low-friction space. Which one fits depends on what you're actually building.
How we evaluated these
We looked at four things: (1) how much ready-made structure the tool offers for characters/locations/relationships, (2) whether links between those elements are manual or automatic, (3) how steep the learning curve is, and (4) whether the primary audience is novelists or tabletop RPG players. Pricing changes over time, so instead of exact numbers we note the general model (free tier / one-time purchase / subscription).
1. World Anvil - the most comprehensive option for RPG campaigns
World Anvil is a large platform built for tabletop RPG (D&D, Pathfinder) game masters, packing interactive maps, timelines, and RPG stat blocks among dozens of tools. 2. Notion - flexible, but manually assembled
Notion is a general-purpose tool that lets you design a worldbuilding system from scratch with databases and linked pages. It's highly flexible, but you have to link character-location-organization relationships by hand; as the system grows, keeping those links current becomes a workload of its own.
3. yazar.io - a focused, auto-connected space built for novelists
yazar.io ships with predefined sections - characters, locations, organizations, lore - and automatically links them when you type @Name in any text, visible from both sides. It doesn't aim to cover tabletop campaign management (dice, session notes, interactive maps) - just keeping the world behind a novel organized. Its standout differences are a native interface and free access during beta.
Is there a free worldbuilding program?
yazar.io is currently in beta and completely free. Notion also has a free tier, but World Anvil's free tier is fairly limited - most features require a paid plan.
Which of these tools has the shortest setup time?
If you don't want to manually link characters, locations, and their relationships (as you would in Notion or via World Anvil's wiki links), yazar.io's automatic @Name linking cuts down setup and maintenance time.
Do any of these replace my manuscript editor?
No - all three are worldbuilding/reference tools, not word processors. You'd still write the actual manuscript in something like Word, Google Docs, or Scrivener alongside whichever of these you use.
