Best Family Tree Software for Writers
There are three ways to track a fictional family tree: genealogy software built for real families, general-purpose diagramming tools built by hand, and writer-specific tools connected directly to your character profiles. Which one fits depends on how large the family is and how often it changes.
How we evaluated these
We looked at three things: (1) whether the tool is built for fictional characters or real genealogical research, (2) whether relationships are fed from the character's own profile or live in a separate, unsynced diagram, and (3) whether symmetric, multi-select relationships like siblings are supported, or only one-way parent-child links.
1. Genealogy software - built for real families
Genealogy programs like Family Tree Maker are built to archive real birth/death/marriage records. You can use them for fictional characters, but it's an awkward fit - there are no narrative fields like motivation or biography, only demographic data.
2. General diagramming tools - flexible, but built by hand
Tools like Miro, Lucidchart, or draw.io let you draw a completely free-form family tree. Flexibility is high, but the diagram isn't connected to your characters' actual profile data - rename a character and you have to update the diagram by hand too.
3. yazar.io - a family tree fed automatically from character profiles
yazar.io's Family Tree section lets you set Parent/Spouse/Sibling relationships either from a character's own profile or from the drag-and-drop family tree screen itself - whichever you use, it reflects automatically on the other side. The Sibling link supports multi-select (you can add more than one sibling at once) and is symmetric - whoever you add as a character's sibling automatically shows that character as their sibling too, on their own page.
Is a family tree only useful for fantasy?
No - it's just as useful in any genre where family ties matter (historical fiction, family drama, literary fiction), it isn't limited to one genre.
Is there a free family tree tool?
yazar.io has a permanently free plan, and the Family Tree section is fully functional on both plans. General diagramming tools like Miro and draw.io also have free tiers, but they aren't automatically connected to your characters.
Can I set up a sibling relationship in the family tree?
Yes - alongside Parent/Spouse, a Sibling link can also be set up by drag-and-drop, multiple siblings can be added at once, and the link shows up automatically on both characters' pages.
