Best Story Bible Software
A story bible keeps every consistency rule for your novel or series (character details, geography, timeline, terminology) in one place. For some writers a single document is enough; others need a system that links sections like characters and locations together. Here's a look at tools representing both approaches.
How we evaluated these
We looked at three things: (1) how much ready-made structure the tool gives story bible elements like characters, locations, and timelines, (2) whether links between them are manual or automatic, and (3) whether it's better suited to a single book or a multi-book series.
1. Word/Google Docs or a notes app; the single-document approach
Many writers keep their story bible in one document, with character and location lists split up by headings. It needs no setup and works fine with a small cast, but finding a specific character or rule gets harder as the document grows; nothing is linked automatically, everything is updated by hand.
2. Notion; flexible, but manually linked
In Notion you can build separate databases for characters, locations, and a timeline and connect them with relations; more structured than a single document, but you design that structure yourself from scratch (see our Notion vs yazar.io comparison).
3. yazar.io; a story bible with ready-made sections and automatic links
yazar.io ships with predefined sections for characters, locations, organizations, lore, and a glossary; type @Name on any page and the link is created automatically and shows up on both sides, while the Event Flow holds your timeline and the family tree holds your relationships. All included in the permanently free plan.
Is keeping my story bible in a single document enough?
Usually yes for a small cast; as your number of characters and relationships grows, a system that tracks links automatically starts to save real time.
Is there a free story bible tool?
Yes; yazar.io has a permanently free plan (2 books, 15 records per type) and Notion also has a free tier; the single-document approach is always free too.
Are a story bible and a worldbuilding tool the same thing?
They're very closely related; 'story bible' usually emphasizes a series' consistency reference, while worldbuilding emphasizes the process of building the world itself. yazar.io covers both in the same connected structure.
