What is a character arc?
A character arc is the change a character goes through in their beliefs, values, or worldview over the course of a story. The character starts out one way, events test them, and by the end they either change (a positive or negative arc) or consciously choose not to (a flat arc).
What are the main types of character arc?
The three most common types: a positive arc (the character overcomes a flaw or false belief and grows), a negative arc (the character corrupts or gives in to a false belief), and a flat arc (the character doesn't change, but instead changes the world around them through a belief they already hold; common for mentors or heroic figures).
How is a character arc different from the plot?
The plot tells you what happens to a character from the outside (completing a quest, defeating an enemy); the character arc tells you what those events change INSIDE the character. In a strong story, the two feed each other: external events trigger the character's internal change.
How do you plan out a character arc?
Three points usually do it: the false belief or flaw the character carries at the start, a midpoint that tests that belief (usually the biggest crisis), and a final moment where the character either breaks free of it or fully commits to it. Does every character need an arc?
No; minor characters usually stay flat, and that's fine. A character arc adds the most value for protagonists and major supporting characters.
Is a flat arc a sign of weak writing?
No; a flat arc is a deliberate choice, and it fits well for a mentor or a hero who already holds the right values. What matters isn't the type of arc, it's whether it's consistent and purposeful.
Are character arc and character development the same thing?
They're used very close to each other; character development is usually the broader umbrella term (covering motivation, backstory, relationships), while a character arc specifically describes the line that change follows across the story.
