Best Ways to Back Up Your Story Notes
Losing a world you built over years to a failed drive, a lost notebook or an accidentally deleted folder is one of the worst things that can happen to a writer. This list compares four common ways writers keep their story and world notes safe.
How we compared them
We looked at three things: (1) how automatically backups happen, (2) how easily you can reach your notes if a device is lost or breaks, (3) how easy it is to find something in the backup. Prices change over time, so we don't quote numbers.
1. External drive or USB stick
Your files are entirely in your hands and don't depend on the internet. But you have to remember to back up, and if the drive sits next to the computer, a theft or accident can take both. This works best as a second copy alongside another method.
2. Cloud storage (like Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox)
Once you sync a folder, backups happen automatically and you can reach them from any device. Most services also keep older versions for a while. But your notes are still scattered documents; the backup is safe, the organization is up to you. Also remember that a file accidentally deleted in a synced folder can disappear from every device.
3. Emailing yourself
Simple and works anywhere: every so often you email an important document to yourself. But it's entirely manual, versions get mixed up in your inbox and finding the latest one gets harder. Handy in an emergency, weak as a regular backup routine.
4. yazar.io
In yazar.io your world is stored in your account, not on your device; even if your phone is lost or your computer breaks, you can sign in from another device and find it unchanged. Character bodies, profile fields and notes are stored encrypted. Deleted books go to the Trash first. You can also use Export in Book Settings to download your whole book as Markdown or JSON anytime and keep your own backup. Your novel's own backup stays in the tool you write it in; yazar.io holds your world, not your manuscript.
Is one backup enough?
Usually not. The common advice is to keep at least one copy in a different place (for example in the cloud or on another device). Exporting your yazar.io world now and then into a cloud folder follows that rule easily.
What if I accidentally delete a book in yazar.io?
The book moves to the Trash first and you can restore it from there. Permanent deletion needs a separate confirmation.
What does the export include?
Characters, locations, notes, events, relationships and other content in your book are included. Markdown gives each record as a separate readable file; JSON gives all the data in a single file.
